Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the U.S. She has worked as media critic since. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency the site which features video and posts analyzing the portrayals of females in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and American feminist media critic. Feminist Frequency examines the way women are depicted in pop culture. In her efforts to dispel the myths that are associated with females in pop culture, she is a vocal advocate for issues relating to harassment targeted at women and the other marginalized groups of people in the online world. Sarkeesian is a graduate in social and political thinking at York University. As a public speaker, she is extremely sought-after and has been a speaker at TEDxWomenXOXO as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Inquiring about gender identities and feminisms from an early age she launched her site Feminist Frequency in 2009, while still a student at the University. She had a plan to create a web series examining gender representation in video games and found herself the target of a harassment online campaign. This attack was not enough to halt her. It actually made her more committed as a feminist and media critic. Her notable contributions to the field of feminists have been recognized by numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian, a media critic, has been awarded several awards and founded Feminist Frequency, an educational organization that focuses on the ways women are depicted within popular culture narratives.
